Day 0 – Wheel dip in the Pacific Ocean

June 17, 2018 – Astoria, OR

After all the planning, all the waiting, all the packing and all the worrying, we start today with a short but very important bike ride.  It’s our ceremonial wheel dip in the Pacific Ocean, to be followed (with some good fortune) by a wheel dip in the Atlantic Ocean 50 days and 3700 miles from now.

So, after a relaxing morning, Jon and I headed out for our 26-mile round trip ride to the beach.  The weather could not have been better and when we got to Fort Stevens State Park and got on the bike path to the beach, it all finally became real.  We carried our bikes on the long walk to the water – no sense getting our gears full of sand – and did our thing.  Pulse rates were elevated, and not just because the water was cold.

Turns out, there is also a skeletal remnant of a shipwreck that was featured in the Goonies movie.  So, of course, Jon had to memorialize that as well.

Check out the pictures of the day, along with some descriptions.  Much more to come, so check back here, y’all.  I will try to post every day.  You can also sign up to get an email report (on the off chance you don’t get enough junk mail already.)

Looking at the Pacific Ocean – bike ride of a lifetime.  (And … check out the socks.)

Dipping the rear wheel in the chilly Pacific … Just a little bit – don’t want to corrode those new wheels.

The Goonies are here. Oh, yes, and there was a movie by that name too.

Mark the spot on the coast where we did it.
